So sorry for your loss. Shirley was a sweet, vibrant lady who always kept us laughing. We so enjoyed the stories she told our kids about her childhood, walking to school through the snow (up hill 5 miles in both directions) and her positive spin on life. I'm sure she is at peace, smiling down from heaven!

My deepest sympathy for your loss. I got to know Shirley when she took painting lessons from my mom, Juanita, back in the early 90’s. They became good friends and it was common for me to come home from school and find Shirley visiting. She was always so happy, and I always remember her smiling. I still have a bracelet that she gave to me.
God Bless!

Dear Maryanne, Margaret, Doug, Hugo, Peter, Nate and Kate,
Your mother/grandmother knew how to LAUGH, LAUGH, LAUGH! She learned in life to carry burdens lightly, not diminishing the poignancy hard times teach but finding grace in the moment and using strength from her personal code of ethics/value system to carry the day.
She also knew how to tap into what she called 'get my Irish up' and could hold her ground, using her wit, patience and sense of the ridiculous to be the most amazingly stubborn person I knew. She was fully cognizant of her skill, like a chess player and she was a gentle master of the game. I say this with complete AWE, ADMIRATION and I confess, jealousy; What a great role model... self advocacy with the best of humor and the most gentle of expression.

Shirley loved an adventure (surgery with Marianne!) and often challenged herself with doing new things. I loved hearing her stories and she encouraged and loved the adventures that I and my children reached for, and would give us the gift of listening to the stories from these adventures. This was the gift of self and she showed us in every interaction, that we mattered to her.

Thank you for sharing Shirley with us. She will be in our hearts forever.
Molly, Maeve and Aidan Carlson

Marianne and Margaret, So sorry to hear about your mom. She was a special lady and well loved. Your mom used to drive me to school in her Cougar when I started attending Hartford, and we used to talk a lot about my future and she would give me advice. I still remember you all coming to our house for get togethers, and all the happy memories of childhood. Praying for you both at this difficult time. love you both.

I have very fond memories of Shirley. When I was a young girl she was my Sunday School teacher in the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Glens Falls. I attended with the John Armstrong family . Shirley provided a notebook for each student and she wrote a scripture verse in green ink for each of us each week. We were excited for her because she was "waiting for her soldier" to come home so they could be married. Later, when I was married, I became her neighbor in Hartford , NY. She was a sweet lady.

Margaret and Marianne - My heart is sad today hearing about the loss of your mom. The last couple of years she would call me after Christmas and I so enjoyed our visits - it was just like we went back fifty years. Your mom was such an important mentor when I was a teenager, keeping me grounded in my faith, being someone I could talk to. I loved her very much. Even the last time I talked to her, she still had the same sense of humor, upbeat spirit, joy of life. My Dad always loved to pick on her - and when he picked on someone, we knew he liked her - both Mom and Dad loved her. Please know that you and your families are in my prayers. Love, Diana (Graham) and Ken Eggleston

From the moment I met Shirley, in August 1970, I knew we'd be close friends. She was always there for me and full of wisdom, kindness and fun. As a new mother, she helped me when I didn't know what to do. (Which was often). She lived a full life-- always spreading joy wherever she went. I will talk to her often in heaven.

Margie, Doug, Marianne, Hugo, Peter, Nate and Katie please accept our sincere condolences at the passing of your dear Mother and Grandmother. Each Sunday we said prayers and lit candles for her and you. She was a lucky lady to be so loved and cared for by you all. She and you did your jobs well, and now she is in the arms of a gentle and loving God. And... little Harper Bell will carry on her name. We carry you with us in our hearts as you grieve and heal. Much Love,
Deb and Mike Misenhimer
