Hope was one of the most honest and forthright people I've ever known. She was refreshingly opinionated, mixed with her strong sense of fairness and a bushel of kindness, she would draw you into one of the most entertaining and intelligent conversations of your life. She was loving and generous, brilliant and talented. And she had a wicked sense of humor. We
shared lots of laughter and lots of tears. Hope dealt with a lot of sorrow and
heartache in her life, but she was never bitter, her forgiving heart and her own inner integrity freed her to live life with a song in her heart, and if you were lucky, you'd get to hear it. She dedicated herself to her family, cooking,
sewing, gardening and music, creating a beautiful home. She loved her
children fiercely, and was a wonderful, thoughtful Grandmother, and Great Grandmother. And we will forever miss her infectious laughter and her singing just for the fun of it. And I will miss getting an ugent long distance phone call about a flower bulb sprouting and bursting through the snow in early Spring. Extraordinary is she whose day is filled with joy by the sight of her favorite bird, or the bloom of a flower. Extraordinary was she.

Well said, Diana!! And I SO agree with each and every lovely detail you've shared about Hope! It's safe to say you knew her well.

Hope was irrepressible, forthright, not afraid to speak her mind, ever! She and I sang in the same choir for a while, and she rode along with us to rehearsals and performances for a few years. Living in a rural area, there were inevitably a few narrow escapes with deer crossing the road - luckily never hit one (at least not when Hope was in the car!) - though once, I believe we found a little bit of deer hair on the edge of the front bumper when one appeared out of nowhere a few feet in front of the (rapidly moving) car. She was very complimentary of my skill at (mostly) missing him!

Another time, on one of those drives (it was in early September), she spoke about how much she loved upstate NY in the fall - that the sky at sunset had a very special, beautiful quality you would only see here. A quality that she assured us she'd not seen anywhere else she'd ever lived: "It's like liquid gold," she said. She loved it. I've never forgotten that description, and ever since, I've found myself noticing the very same quality to the late afternoon/early evening sunlight that can be seen when the days begin to grow shorter.

Thank you Hope, for sharing that marvellous word picture, and helping a native upstate New Yorker to see some of the beautiful things I might otherwise have missed. If the world had more people like you to help us see the beauty in it, the world might be a much better place.

I hope you are bathed in just that kind of liquid golden light even now. Actually... I'm pretty sure you are. Godspeed, dear lady.
